On May 31, 1970 an avalanche took place in Yungay, Peru on the north slope of Mt. Huascaran and caused it to collapse. Avalanches were not a surprise to the area , although typically you could begin to hear the ice crack a few moments prior to the natural disaster occurring. This particular avalanche was traveling at speeds up to 335 kpm with 80 million feet of ice and snow . Another avalanche happened only 8 years earlier in the same area on January 10, 1962. this avalanche however took place on the side of a dormant volcano and killed over 4,000 people.
